Who should I contact if I find an injured bat?

Electrocution is a seasonal problem for flying-foxes that rest on a powerline. If they make contact with a second wire they are killed instantly, but remarkably their young often survive. Contact your local electricity authority immediately and they will rescue it. (Chapter 3: Rescue techniques)

Tips to help you find a specialist bat carer:

  • Contact your local bat rescue organisation.
  • Contact your local wildlife care group.
  • Contact Wildlife Rescue Australia on 1300 596 457.
  • Contact your state Wildlife Authority. (Appendix I)

Only specialist bat carers can rescue and handle bats. A pre-exposure Australian bat lyssavirus vaccination is mandatory for bat carers. (See Chapter 11: Bats)
